Aquaculture Project Officer
De Heus Animal Nutrition is a fourth-generation Dutch family business that has grown into a major global player with over 10,000 employees. De Heus is large in Europe and Asia and is growing fast in Africa. It is a top ten animal nutrition company globally. De Heus produces animal feed for a wide variety of livestock. It has over 80 production locations in 20 countries, serves more than 75 countries and sells over 12 million tons of feed per year. In Uganda, De Heus is best known for its brand Koudijs. To extend its business in East Africa, De Heus will start local production of animal feed in Uganda and Kenya. The construction of a new tilapia fish feed plant in Uganda will boost aquaculture, create jobs, improve food security, and shift from import to export.

What is your role?
As a member of our expanding local commercial team, you will play a crucial role in supporting projects that benefit our customers and foster the growth of the aquaculture market. Your primary responsibility will be to assist De Heus in gaining a deeper understanding of the market and its customers. This will involve gathering information and contributing to the development of existing projects.
You will work on projects that actively support current and future aqua farmers, helping them grow and progress while attracting more entrepreneurs to the aquaculture sector. At De Heus, we take pride in partnering with our customers to achieve mutual growth.
Your work will primarily focus on Jinja and its surrounding areas, with the potential for involvement across Uganda and possibly East Africa. This role will require regular field visits to engage with the projects you are managing. You will report directly to the Commercial Manager and collaborate closely with colleagues in sales and marketing throughout the East African region.
Your key responsibilities are to:
- Help establish a mentorship programme in which our customers can supported on their farming
- Design audit protocols for sales representatives to utilize during field visits.
- Initiate collaborations with other off-takers and input suppliers to benefit our customers.
- Assist the marketing team in creating a campaign promoting healthy fish consumption in Uganda.
- Develop projects to enhance the accessibility of fish farming inputs.
- Participate in initiatives aimed at increasing fish prices in Uganda.
- Engage in additional projects that arise to further develop the market.
What do we expect from you?
We are looking for someone who is proactive and able to work independently. You are highly motivated and know how to effectively complete your tasks. This role requires strong planning skills, commercial insights, and a genuine interest in the aquaculture sector. You are analytical and dependable, with a clear understanding of what it takes to execute successful projects in this field.
You have demonstrated your ability to manage projects from start to finish, taking responsibility for quality throughout the process. With a true "can do" attitude, you don’t hesitate to take action, believing that actions speak louder than words. Additionally, you are a dedicated team player who values collaboration.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has a bachelor’s degree either in aquaculture, project management or a related field.
- Has a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the aquaculture sector, experience with project management is an advantage
- Is a fast learner: accurate, analytical and reliable.
- Has good typing skills and can work well with MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
